Honolua Store

Kaplua Resort, Maui, Hawaii

Our identity and graphics program for the store and casual restaurant at Maui’s Kapalua Resort reflect the building’s background as a center of community life at this historic pineapple plantation.

  • Built in 1929 by pineapple plantation carpenters, Honolua Store is still a central feature of Kapalua Resort.
  • The land's rich history as well as native Hawaiian culture provided inspiration during the creative process.
  • It was impossible to ignore the store's history as a pineapple plantation during the identity development phase.
  • The completed identity pays homage to the history of the store as it began with the Maui Pineapple Company.
  • Exterior signage and vehicular graphics relied heavily on the pineapple theme as well.
  • The design of these custom wood and wrought-iron effect point-of-purchase endcap displays allow for easily changeable product boards.
  • This spine signage tells the story of Kapalua Farms, which provides fresh, organically-managed produce for Kapalua Resort and the surrounding community. Removable inserts were built into the sign structure with easy modification in mind.
  • Tabletop "story" signage was crafted to showcase the history and culture of the store and it's vendors.
  • Product-level signs were produced digitally for efficiency and consistency.
  • Dimensional department signage was created with materials that reflected the store's original interior.
  • We designed a hanging structure with removable chalkboards to make changing the Delicatessen and Coffee Bar menus easier. The structure was powder-coated to match original wrought-iron finishings found throughout the store interior.
