Together with Lake|Flato Architects, we utilized glass, metal and paper as part of the renovation of the Harry Ransom Center, home to some of the world’s greatest art, film, and literary artifacts.
Three sides of the building are a system of etched glass panels. We worked with the Center's curators to select and lay out the images.
An early scale model helped the client understand the scale and complexity of the design solution.
We worked with Skyline Glass to develop a method to reproduce a wide range of image types including text, photography, and etchings.
Each glass panel was acid etched on the second surface, then filled with a pigment to create better contrast for inside-out and outside-in viewing. The read of the windows changes throughout the day, depending on lighting conditions and reflections.
The main entrance is surrounded by a collage of the signatures of the collection's holdings.
This simple guide to the origin of artifacts on the windows was produced for the Ransom Center's many visitors. This side is oriented for visitors who are inside looking out...
...this side is for use from the outside looking in.
